Dangerous food combination can be deadly. While you are stocking up your plate with your favorite foods, pay attention to the food combination.

The food might be delicious, but it may have an adverse reaction down the road.

Everyone has to eat to survive, but caution is required when combining some foods. It could be a matter of life or death. An all-natural diet would be an excellent alternative. In the meantime, it is helpful to point out the dangers of mixing specific foods.

Citrus Fruits Combined with Cough Syrup and Other Prescribed Medicine

There are certain foods to avoid when taking prescription medicine and certain over the counter medicine. It is called dangerous food combination. It could be detrimental to your health.

For example, it is not advisable to combine citrus fruits with cough medicine such as Dextromethorphan. It is considered a dangerous food combination. Examples of citrus fruits include grapefruits, lemons, limes, oranges, and tangerines.

Citrus fruits contain chemicals that interact with the breakdown of the prescription medicine or cough medicine. This will prevent the medicine from doing its job. It may not stay in your system long enough to have an effect.

In some cases, the drug may remain in the body too long. This could cause harmful buildup. As a result, it could cause muscle damage, hallucinations, and other known side effects from the medicine.

To be on the safe side, always ask your doctor what to avoid when taking prescribed medicines.

Here is a short list of medicines not to combine with citrus fruits:
  • Erythromycin & others– used to fight infections
  • Lipitor (Atorvastatin), Lovastatin (Altoprev) & others – used to lower cholesterol
  • Felodipine, Carvedilol (Coreg) & others – used to treat high blood pressure
  • Amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone) & others – used to treat heart problems
  • Diazepam (Valium, Diastat), Fluvoxamine & others – used to treat depression
  • Cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral, others), Tacrolimus (Prograf, Astagraf) & others – used to prevent organ rejection in recipients with transplants

Dairy Foods and Antibiotics

Another dangerous food combination is dairy foods and antibiotics. Examples of dairy foods: milk, cheese, cream, butter, yogurt, frozen desserts, and ice cream. The calcium in dairy products restricts the absorption of the antibiotics. This means that it will have no effect on fighting infections.

Always follow the advice of your physician when eating foods with certain types of medicine.

Smoked Meats and Antidepressants

Smoked meats and antidepressants are a no-no. This is another dangerous food combination. Combining meats and antidepressants will lead to high blood pressure Cured meats are high in tyramine. Tyramine is a monoamine compound found naturally in certain foods, plants, or animals.

The monoamine compound acts as a neurotransmitter. It transmits signals to other nerves. The compound materializes when foods are fermented, aged, or get spoiled. Everyone should check with his or her doctor when taking any prescription drugs with food.

  • Aged meats
  • Smoked meats or pickled meats

  • Pickled fish
  • Aged cheese

Here is a list of antidepressants or MAOIs:

  • Iproniazid (Marsilid, – Irpozid, Ipronid, Rivivol, Propilniazida)
  • Isocarboxazid (Marplan)
  • Mebanazine (Actomol)
  • Moclobemide (Aurorix, Manerix)
  • Nialamide (Niamid)
  • Octamoxin (Ximaol, Nimaol)
  • Phenelzine (Nardil)
  • Safrazine (Safra)
  • Selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam)
  • Tranylcypromine (Parnate)
The following list of drugs will interact badly with the antidepressants (MAOIs):
  • Pseudoephedrine (nasal decongestant)
  • Amphetamine or Dextroamphetamine
  • Naphazoline or Oxymetazoline (in nasal sprays)
  • Isometheptene (in prescription drug Migranal)
  • Meperidine (ingredient in Demerol, for pain)
  • Eye drops with decongestants
  • Herbal products with stimulants
Not all food combinations are dangerous, but they do wreak havoc on your health. Here is a list of common food combinations and why you should not eat them together:
  • Tomatoes and starchy foods
  • Meat/Protein and starchy foods
  • Liquid with meals
  • Cold Drinks
  • Fruits and yogurt
  • Cereal and milk along with orange juice
  • Eating fruits with or after meal
  • Melon with other foods
  • Milk and banana
  • Cheese and beans
  • Cheese and meat
  • Burgers and fries
  • Do not cook honey

Tomatoes and Pasta

Tomato and Pasta is a very popular food combination. Unfortunately, your stomach would beg to differ. Tomatoes are acidic when cooked. This is not considered a dangerous food combination.  However, combining tomato with starchy foods result in poor digestion. Examples of starchy foods: Rice, pasta, bread, potatoes, noodles, and cereals.

The acid contains in the tomatoes act against the starch in the pasta. This weakens the enzymes. The combination weighs heavily on the stomach. The acid also curdles the cheese contained in the tomato and pasta dish. The result is an upset stomach.

You could suffer from GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) and a host of digestive problems. Some will argue that the combination does nothing to them. The food will lack its value because of the mix. Additionally, the food will not digest properly.

The effect is not always immediate. Fast forward to the future, those same people may end up with stomach related health problems.

Meat/Protein and Starchy Foods

Combining meat or other proteins with starchy foods is unwise. Meat by itself is tough to digest. Compounding it with starchy foods would make it even worse. The body needs acid to digest the meat properly. It is not a dangerous food combination.

Conversely, the body needs alkaline to digest starches. In essence, the food combination cancels each other out. Combining the two foods will not yield any benefit. According to Dr. Pickering, wait two hours after eating starchy foods before eating any meat or protein based foods.

Liquid with Meals

Many people drink either juice or water with their meals. The water interferes with the proper digestion of the food. When you drink water, it takes about ten minutes to pass through the stomach.

It takes about fifteen to thirty minutes for juice to go through the stomach. The body needs acid to digest any protein based foods and alkaline to digest starch.

The water and juice will neutralize the acid and or the alkaline in the stomach. The liquids will wash out all the acids and alkaline the body need to digest protein and or starchy foods.

Wait at least an hour after eating to drink liquids.

Cold Drinks

Do not consume cold drinks during or after meals according to the experts. The same would apply to frozen yogurts and ice cream. The cold liquid slows down digestion.The results could lead to allergies, colds, and other digestive problems. Sip on warm water instead. It will digest the food properly.

Fruits and Yogurt

Combining fruits and yogurt could lead to unnecessary allergies. It is not a dangerous food combination. The bacteria in the yogurt react with the sugar in the fruits. This combination will block the sinuses. The results could lead to colds and exacerbate allergies.

According to the experts, eat the fruits by themselves.

Cereal with Milk and Orange Juice

Combining cereal with milk and downing a glass of orange juice afterward is a popular household staple. Having all three so close to each other is not beneficial. The orange juice contains acid. It will destroy the enzymes in the cereal that are used to digest the food.

The acid will also curdle the milk. In other words, the milk would turn sour in your stomach. You can drink orange juice thirty minutes before having the cereal.

Fruits with or after Meals

Some people like to eat fruits with meals or directly after their meals. Fruits digest very quickly. On the other hand, it takes a very long time for starchy foods to digest. When the two get combined, the fruits stay much longer in the stomach and starts to break down into sugar. This is bad news for diabetics.

According to the experts, it is best to eat fruits thirty minutes to an hour before your meal.

Melons with other Fruits or Foods

Eating melons with other foods or fruits is not advisable.

Here is a short list of melon varieties: Watermelons, casaba, cantaloupe, papaya, and honeydew.

Other melon varieties include xigua, horned melon, musk, and other varieties.

Eat melons by themselves. Combining them with other fruits or foods will upset the stomach.

Milk and Banana

According to the experts, it is not wise to combine milk with bananas. As a combination, they do not digest well. It is heavy on your stomach and slows down the mind. Moreover, the combination produces toxins in the body. This could lead to allergies, cold, or a cough. An option is to use coconut milk.

Cheese and Beans

Cheese and beans are bad combinations. Consuming them together results in gas, bloating, and other digestive problems. You could eat beans alone minus the cheese.

Cheese and Meat

Cheese and meat are not the best combinations. Meat by itself is tough to digest. Adding cheese would only compound the problem. It requires way too much energy to digest. Eat meat with steamed vegetables as an option.

Burgers and Fries

Burgers and fries are extremely popular, but the combination is bad, bad, bad. The combination is high in cholesterol, and the meat does not digest well. Burgers usually get overcooked.

As a result, the fat and preservatives contained in the burger create a charcoal-like substance. The fries combined with the charcoal-like element produce cytokines. The cytokines affect the behavior of other cells. This causes inflammation and speeds up the aging process.

Do not Cook Honey

According to Dr. Vasant Lad, when you cook honey, it turns into glue. It attaches itself to mucous membranes. It clogs up individual channels and produce toxins. Use Organic raw honey instead.

Guidelines on Food Combination

Based on research, I have come up with instructions on what foods to combine.

It takes much energy to digest foods. It behooves you to make sure that foods get properly combined. Your stomach will thank you in the long run.

Combine meat or protein with green leafy vegetables and non-starchy vegetables.

If consuming raw vegetables, eat them after protein or starch. They digest more quickly.

Eat fruits, or anything sweet, alone.

Add the following to green leafy vegetables: Avocado, mustard, lettuce, tomato and sprouts on whole-grain bread.

Eat fresh fruits in the morning preferably on an empty stomach.

Eat melons alone.

It is okay to combine the following fruits: Grapefruit, apples, apricots, oranges, lemons, and blackberries.

Other fruits that are good to combine are plums, limes, kiwis, peaches, cherries, and strawberries.

You can also mix these fruits: Pears, raspberries, cranberries, mangoes, nectarines, pineapples, grapes, and papayas.

If you prefer to drink milk, consume it by itself.

Eating celery and lettuce with fruits is okay.

Eat lemon, lime, and tomatoes with green vegetables.

Summary

Although the experts have good advice, it comes down to knowing your body and how the body reacts to certain foods. Once certain foods get combined, You will understand the impact on your body based on the discomfort. It may not happen right away, but years down the road, you may regret your poor choices.

People have complained about upset stomach, acid reflux, GERD, and many more digestive problems. Some have pinpointed the cause of their upset stomach. Instead of combining the right foods, they take anti-acids. That will not solve their problems. In the long run, it only opens the door for diseases and a short life-span.

The reason some people are calcium deficient is because foods are not combined the right way. You could consume foods rich in calcium and wonder why there is a deficiency. It is all about proper food combination.
